Joined the 66th Regiment (Army): said to be a student of Ampleforth College in 1819 he was. His father was a Captain in the Navy at this time. According to archived documents in Western Australia he trained to enter the Roman Catholic Church. It was suggested that he try his luck in the Army and so he purchased the rank as a Ensign. His name was John Lomas, of York. His father was possibly Captain Ralph Lomas. Thus he may be separate from James.
