AMPLEFORTH  HISTORY  PHOTOS

This photograph of the School was taken in 1865. In 1923 its date and the names were supplied to Fr Louis d’Andria by Abbot Anselm Burge (who had left that summer), D’Andria was a careful historian who occupied spare time at St Peter’s, Liverpool, in the war years (during air raids?) by assembling historical information.
The low building in the background (with the slate roof) was the passage which led from the end of the Old House cloister into Hansom’s church of 1857: in other words, what later generations till 1956 knew as the main entrance to the church. Part of its north side appears to the right.
